• IT happens around this same time every year (well, almost every year).

IT keeps us up late at night.

IT gives us jitters and anxiety.

IT makes us cranky and tired in the morning, wishing we hadn’t participated.

When we’re with IT, we can’t control ourselves.

    What is IT?

IT = Dallas Mavericks Playoff Season

p.s.  I actually went to bed in the 3rd quarter last night…too tired (but I did stay up for our win on Sat night).  Derek was up, though, all the way thru OT right into the arms of victory.  He wasn’t feeling super victorious this morning with those sleepy eyes, but he said it was worth it!  Go MAVS!

  • We call Jacob our Big Dude and Caleb little dude.  We call Jacob Thing One and Caleb Thing Two.  We call Jacob Big J and Caleb Boo.  So many names…silly, really, but I love it.

Saw the pediatrician today and it was strep…again.  Fifth time in 9 months.  She told me that 3 is the max they like to see in a year.  Made an appointment with an ENT for June.  He broke down in the elevator…the poor thing is terrified of shots so the word "remove" when referring to his throat didn’t sit well.  But let’s hope it will make for a better school year, and a healthier and happier Big J.

  • We had a wonderful Mother’s Day and enjoyed having my mom, Steve, his mom Kay, Mark, and Audra here to celebrate with us.  For obvious reasons, it’s one of my favorite holidays.  I like being celebrated…what can I say!?!  I also love the feeling of being appreciated.  Derek had the boys each tell me things that they love about me…that was special.  And he also grilled filet mignon, which was delicious.  Every year he gets me an orchid corsage to wear to church (he also gets one for his sister).  I love that tradition.  It’s not necessary and yesterday I only got to wear it for an hour because I had to take Jacob home sick.  But it makes me feel loved…and that’s a great feeling.

There was also another special gift from Derek, that will remain a surprise until later in the week…stay tuned for a post on that topic!  I love a little blog suspense…

Jacob’s got that yucky strep again, and boy does it take its toll on him.  It breaks my heart.  He didn’t eat ANYTHING yesterday except a little bit of applesauce.  And his fever is high.  He slept in our room last night and wimpered thru the night.  So sad…this is twice in one month.

We were lucky enough to have dinner with his art teacher the other night at Gattitown.  I do believe it was the thrill of his LIFE.  He was so excited…woke up that morning saying it was his "BIG DAY".  She was very sweet and she’s so good at what she does.  We won the dinner at a silent auction.  I found him staring at the picture of her with a pen in hand ready to sign his name, and decided to intervene.

I’m off to take my boy to the doctor…

  • Nothin’ important to blog about…just ranting today.

Caleb told me yesterday that he was almost a grown-up…because he’s getting a little bit of blonde hair on his fingers.  "I’m almost like Dad!!!" he exclaimed.  Funny!

Was reading the news this morning and am amazed at the relevant topics in the news today:

Britney Spears is having another baby.  Heaven help us.  And that’s after 2 DCFS visits to her home already.  I’m sure she’s a very sweet girl…but that dude she’s married to…needs some serious help.

David Blaine fails attempted record.  Is this the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever seen?!  I mean, come on!  Swimming in a bubble for days and trying to hold your breath under water for 9 minutes.  That’s just plain stupidity and recklessness.  Someone get that man a real job.

Tom Cruise and his girlfriend Katie.  How long before we see her on Oprah talking about how controlling he really is?  He’s a menace to our society, if you ask me.  Poor girl has to live in his narcissistic shadow.

Well…I’m sure by now I’m sounding a little bitter and cynical…it must be my mood today.  But, honestly, isn’t there more important news in the world…tell me about Iraq or South Korea or something relevant.

Enough ranting and raving from me.  Gotta go send the mother’s day gifts, visit 3 stores about donated balloons for the Kindergartners, make an animal mask for Caleb’s music class, cook for meal club, attend the PTA Council Meeting to learn how to be a Historian and well, the list goes on.  Have a good day!

  • No school today…already played tennis and did our run/walk around the track.  I’ve also already grounded Jacob for misbehaving this morning.  Foreshadowing of what summer might be like, sadly.   Had a great time at the wedding festivities this weekend.  We especially loved catching up with extended family and hanging out with not so extended family.  Here are some pics from that event:

  • I went this morning to what could be one of my favorite events of the whole year…Muffins for Mom with the Kindergartners.  All 8 classes gathered in the cafeteria to sing us songs ("You are my Sunshine") and present us with gifts.  At Jacob’s table I had 3 kids whose moms weren’t there (2 of them showed up a little later) while they were singing.  So I had Jacob and his buddy, Zachary, singing to me on each side and Emily crying big tears on my lap.  It broke my heart!  These little ones just love their mommies.  The teachers made all of the muffins…bless their hearts, as if a teacher has time to be making 4 dozen muffins!  I got a paper bouquet of flowers, a large envelope with handmade stationery and a card that had typed sentences about why I was special with drawings to go with it.

"My mom is special becuz she likes me." Jacob wrote.

    I do, indeed.

  • but IF HE WAS…I’m pretty sure I know who he’d be betting on tomorrow in the Kentucky Derby.

    BROTHER DEREK!!!!

  • Not a whole lot worthy of the blog this week…pathetic, I know.  It’s not cuz we don’t have stuff going on…May seems to be crazy that way.  Just nothin’ on the blog brain.  I played tennis with a friend this morning and we’re going to play twice a week…now that’s dedication.  Plus, there’s a track right next to the courts and we’re going to get some cardio in too.

We have a fun and fancy family wedding this weekend for my cousin.  It will be great to see the fam, and eat yummy food (free food!).  Bought an outfit for it at fancy, schmancy Kohls!  I can guarantee I’ll be the only girl there outfitted in Kohls…guaranteeeeeee!

I’m really hoping Kat doesn’t get booted from American Idol tonight.

I’m really hoping the hippies survive on the Amazing Race.

And I really hope LOST isn’t playing another re-run, because if so I might have to make the dramatic switch to 24.

    Smith, OUT!

  • what Caleb said to me yesterday.  We were dropping Jacob off at a friend’s house to play after school.  Caleb asked several times if he was going too, but I had to remind him that this was Jacob’s play date.  I took Jacob up to the door, said goodbye and when I got back in the car, Caleb said this,

"It’s OK.  Mommies are better than friends."

What a sweetie, he is!  I’m going to pull this out when he’s 15, as a reminder.

  • My pop culture consultant has let me know that in a previous post I incorrectly attributed the song "We Are Family" to Diana Ross and the Supremes (which seemed fishy even as I typed it).  The correct attribution would be to the ever-famous SISTER SLEDGE group (never heard of ’em).  But upon further investigation, it’s also important to note that the POINTER SISTERS also recorded a version of it (those girls I know, since I happened to perform one of their songs in a 7th grade musical, thank you very much).  I’ve listened to both versions and am still not sure which version they play at Jacob’s school each week, but we’ll go with Sister Sledge.  Thank you, Steve!
