My family had lots of dogs growing up – the one that was closest to my heart was "Lucky", a black and tan miniature dachshund.  He was my confidante during rocky teenage years.  I loved that little dog.  He had to be put to sleep when I was in college – I cried and cried.

Derek had his own dog as a teenager – "Toby".  He even took him to obedience school.  I don't know what kind of dog Toby was exactly (even though I met Toby on several occasions), I just know he was black – jet black.  And Derek loved him.

Almost every single member of our extended families have dogs – we come from a long line of dog lovers.

But even with all of the dog "love", I have distanced myself from ever having one.

Nope – no way.

Don't love 'em.

Until now.

Something changed this summer.  Maybe it's because Jacob's approaching 10.  Maybe because my OCD tendencies with cleanliness have seemingly waned.  Maybe because "all boys need a dog" and I've got three of 'em.  Maybe because I want another baby, but Derek is not convinced we can do another pregnancy again anytime soon – if ever.

But whatever the reason, I've had a change of heart.

We've been researching since the spring and found the dog for us (a soft-coated wheaten terrier – hypoallergenic, non-shedding, great with kids).  Then we looked and looked for a breeder and found one who happens to live about 20 minutes away (RARE!).

And today…

Our "girl" was born.

We are still debating the name – it will either be Molly or Maggie.  If Samuel has anything to do with it (and he usually does) it will be Maggie.

Maggie/Molly will look just like her mom someday – they get blonder as they get older.

Part of me thinks "what.have.I.done?"

The other part of me is pretty thrilled!

Molly/Maggie won't be coming home with us until mid-November.

You can read more about soft-coated wheaten terriers HERE.  Ours will have the "Irish" coat just like her mom – shiny and wavy versus the American coat which is fluffier.

Awwwww! I’m so jealous. I grew up in a dog-loving family. I wanted to be a vet when I “grew up.” My BBF Ginger was ours when I turned 9 and she was hit by a car when I was 17. And we tried nursing her back to health, but after 2 weeks, it was clear what her fate was. I still have her dog tags. Just can’t bring myself to getting rid of them. And then I met Eric, who is NOT an animal lover. It’s the great debate. Perhaps once Hannah’s reached 10, perhaps we can talk. Enjoy the extra girl in the family! 🙂

I hope my post yesterday didn’t dampen your enthusiasm. We do love our dogs. I just never pictured myself bending over and rubbing the back of a dog as he threw up–much like I do when my kids are sick. Unfortunately, dogs don’t get the concept of heading for the toilet.
She is VERY cute and I’m sure will be very loved in your home!

You have done a GOOD thing! We love our dog- got him last November and I haven’t regretted it once. He’s a great dog, the kids love him, and we just have so much fun with him. Non-shedding would be FANTASTIC! That’s my only complaint! Yeah for Maggie!!!

Too precious! I’m so excited for your boys. I like the name Molly, but I could be somewhat biased… we have a little blonde Shih-tzu named Mollie. Although, Maggie is cute, too. That was one of the runner-up names when we put it to a family vote. Enjoy her and be patient. (The first couple of months can be slightly trying.)

I laughed a little at the juxtaposition of your last two blog posts. I wonder if your neat little piles of clothing stand a chance against a puppy?
I’m excited to come and meet Molly/Maggie in November. She’s very cute!

I’m so excited for your family! Just think, a new member of your family and you didn’t have to endure a pregnancy! 🙂 The dog is adorable and I’m sure will be so loved in your home….our exciting news on the dog front is I’m putting down a deposite on a puppy that is to be born next month! We’re so excited and we’re going to give it to our kids Christmas morning! The two names we’re going between in Callie and Bailey. You’ll have to let me know how things go and you’ll have to teach me how to potty train a puppy! 🙂
