The cost of the Internet

I don't know if Derek and I have EVER actually paid for the Internet.  When Derek started working with Cisco Systems we were in an apartment (i.e. dial-up) and as soon as we moved to a house (in 2000) the company picked up the bill for the Internet.

I don't even know how much this expensive habit costs me!  I've always taken for granted that this is not a monthly expense that we have to worry about…until Derek sent me this notice today:

Effective April 6, 2009, in the United States and Canada, most employees will no longer be allowed to submit a request for reimbursement of their home broadband.

Now – don't get me wrong.  I'm happy to pay for broadband if it insures us keeping our job…VERY happy to pay.  But how much is this going to put me out?  I have NO EARTHLY IDEA. 🙂

Oh and btw, I do not believe that the Internet is a disposable part of our lives.  It is a NECESSITY.  I will start making my own clothes, baking my own bread, and concocting my own soap before I EVER get rid of the Internet.

    Can you imagine life without the internet–we might actually have to pick up the phone and call each other!! And I would definitely have to ask to be released from my calling without the ability to email.

    I would have to agree with you. Isn’t it sad, that we’d rather make our own clothes and soap before giving up the internet??!! It’s too central a part of my life! I think we pay 14.99 for our DSL. Hope that helps!

    Roadrunner cable modem costs us $49.99/month (it was $19.99/month for the first year as a gimick to get us join then went up). It became a necessity because we had dial-up through AOL and then tried Netzero, but either way, Joshua was spending an hour doing payroll for 3 employees, way too ridiculous. He finally convinced me to allow him to get the cable modem. Hate the price but it’s worth it for the speed of service, I suppse.
    btw, Mer, I’m going to start making my own homemade laundry detergent!! I’m with ya’ on doing things homemade if it means saving money to keep the Internet at home!! lol
