Leave it to my husband to be THERE, at a time like this…

Califires

He assures me that he is safe.  But last night he could see the glow of orange in the mountains.  And this morning his car was covered with ash, "like snow" he said.  And he said the ash just rains down and it’s smelly and hazy.  My mom and Steve have a home outside of San Diego that has been spared before, but just barely, a few years ago.  We’re hoping that’s the case this time too.

My sister-in-law has been at the Hotel Coronado for three days on forced evacuation. They are smuggling their dogs into the hotel using suitcases, and have 5 people and 2 dogs sharing one king size bed. So far their home is still intact (they think). Scott’s cousin’s home is even closer to the fire, and they’ve spent 2 days at a local Stake Center. I’ve been so grateful for my home this week, and worry for all of the families without one. Hoping for a change in the weather soon!

Our home has been spared so far. Steve anxiously watched all the live reports for about 48 hours and the house was “in between” fires. During the last fire in So. CA. a couple of years ago, our home experienced singed shutters, smoke damage, and the iron gate across the back of the house melted. I am thinking of those who have lost their homes and so many memory-holders, in fires. The video feeds are awe-inspiring and terrifying. We’re thankful . . .

I just spoke with a good friend of ours this evening who’s son attends Pepperdine; the kids are back in class today and are safe but many of the buildings/homes/restaurants in the area were destroyed by the fires – how scary to have a child attend school so many miles away and you are here helpless in this situation.
Stay warm and safe in Frisco!
