• I LOVED everything (no foolin') about this latest Gourmet Club – it was Thai food, one of my favorites!  And our hosts, Emily and Katie, served up some seriously delicious food!

  • After grocery shopping last week, I was feeling a bit proud of my latest nutritional choices.  We have been trying to eliminate high fructose corn syrup (which is harder than it sounds – wheat thins!  whole wheat bread!) from our diet.  And I was feeling like I could be the next "Kashi Momma Model" or something like that (as long as it did not involve a bathing suit or any pictures of my face – hand model, perhaps?).  Let me demonstrate:

    034

Vegetarian & Organic Refried Beans (I know what you're thinking, because I thought it too – are there refried beans that come from animals?  He, he, he!  I think it just means lard-free).

    035

Mmmmmm, there's some good healthy fiber for ya – gotta love Kashi snacks.

    036

Natural Peanut Butter with flax oil – good stuff!

    037

Derek and I love these brown and wild rice packets that you put in the microwave for 90 seconds and serve with fish or chicken – love 'em!

SEE – I could qualify for some kind of middle-aged, slightly overweight, but feeding-her-family-good-stuff competition!

    BUT –

    WAIT –

    WAaaaiiiiitttttt –

Wait just one cotton pickin' minute!!

How did THOSE get in here?

    038

There go my chances as if she ever had any.  Somebody call Kashi – she's an imposter!  A wannabe!  A farse!

  • Last night for Family Home Evening (an effort to gather together every Monday night for "together" time – teaching, discussing, playing, etc.) we made REAL popcorn.  The kind you let pop on the stove in oil!  Did you know such a thing existed?!  It was delightfully yummy…and cheap.

And then we watched a beautiful documentary about our Church's current President and Prophet, Thomas S. Monson.  He is an inspiration and great example of service.  We loved learning more about his life.  You can see it HERE.

    Lovely evening!

  • Today is my mom's birthday.

She is the prettiest and smartest woman I know.

    Happy Birthday, Mom.

    We love you.

  • After church yesterday, while eating lunch we saw that a beautiful bird was going in and out of Caleb's birdhouse in the backyard.  Then we see another bird, same type but a little less colorful, going in too…this time with straw and leaves…Making a nest!!  So we proceeded to watch these birds all afternoon as they busied themselves.  Unfortunately I don't have a zoom lens, so my pictures aren't great.  But we could zoom in on the computer and me and Jacob did some research and discovered that our birds are Eastern Bluebirds.  It took a while to figure out exactly which type of bird these were, but as soon as we put our picture next to these we were so excited – it's the exact same!  See HERE for some pictures.

Then we read this about them:

"The red, white, and blue Eastern Bluebird is a familiar and welcomed tenant of birdhouses in suburban yards."

"Male dark blue with bright reddish chest. Female drab gray-blue with duller reddish chest."

"The male Eastern Bluebird does a "Nest Demonstration Display" at the nest cavity to attract the female. He brings nest material to the hole, goes in and out, and waves his wings while perched above it. That is pretty much his contribution to nest building; only the female Eastern Bluebird builds the nest and incubates the eggs."

That last paragraph cracked us up because we had been wondering why the male never actually contributed to the nest, he just popped in and out to observe.  The female was doing all the work!  Very funny – and very interesting to witness.

They were there all afternoon working.  I'll be so excited if we have an entire bluebird family living in our backyard all spring!

And Caleb is, of course, very proud that his birdhouse is getting such high praise from actual birds.

  • I am so sad to learn that my ENTIRE Final Four for my March Madness bracket is WRONG.  Not one team that I picked is in.  Very sad day for me.  Not only was I competing with Derek (and now I have to take him to III Forks, which is not too sad!) but I was also competing with my dad and brothers and Derek in our CBS sports on-line bracket competition and I definitely lost that too.  Sad, sad day.

    Better luck next year.

  • Tonight I put my rubber gloves on and cleaned up my favorites list on my computer.  Are you like me?  Do you bookmark like a mad woman, but never EVER refer back to your bookmarks?  Yea, that's me.  And my favorites were about 2 and 1/2 miles long.  So I got busy and sorted and cleaned and mostly did a lot of deleting.  But in the process found some things that I had forgotten about that I love!  Memorialize them with me, won't you?

    1.  THIS piggy bank.  Cool company.  Each of my kids own one – red, blue and green.  The neat thing is that they come with stickers that you can customize for your own saving/giving needs.

    Piggybank

    2.  THIS paper company (it's not Dunder Mifflin, I'll tell you that right now).  I could wallpaper my house with these papers, I love them so.

    3.  I have a need to own THIS.  Someone - please – take a note…this is a perfect Christmas present for me.  Love the colors.  Love the sound.   It speaks to me…strangely.

    Gurglepot

    4.  On one of our drives to Utah or Colorado I am determined to do THIS cowboy breakfast at the Palo Duro Canyon.

    5.  I love THIS guy's photos from around the world.  Kay introduced us to his work, and now my mom and Steve own some too.  My favorites are of the Amalfi Coast and Colonial Mexico.

    Amalficoast

    6.  I had this guy bookmarked way before he became a "star".  :)  I've wanted to have THESE silhouettes of the kids done for years.  But now I have seen several people doing it themselves.  Maybe I'll try!

    5.  And lookie here – I had THIS bookmarked, but had forgotten about it.  It's the geneaology of my great-great-great grandparents.  Very cool.

I should clean out more often!

  • Queen Bee ("dominant reproductive female") – ME, obviously, the only qualifying bee in the hive

Drone Bee ("has big strong wings, which are used for the mating flight (whoa – let's keep it g-rated please), after mating they are taken care of by the worker bees (sounds good to me) – Derek

Worker Bees – Jacob, Caleb, and Samuel

We make up a very effective colony, if I do say so myself.

All kidding aside, I love to see my boys work and work hard.  I'm grateful for Derek who is such an amazingly hard worker in everything he does, and who teaches my boys how to work.  I hope that together we can not only teach them how to work, but teach them how to feel good about the work that they do.

  • I just had to have these cutest of Easter eggs when I saw them.  They are from here.

    039

Now if only I could get up the courage to make THIS adorable basket too.  Not that they would match or go together or anything…but then I would be surrounded by Easter cuteness.  And those fabrics!  Delicious!

It's really too bad that I'm not an amazing sewster (sounds cooler than seamstress), because I could really get into it if I was.

ETA: Oh no she didn't!  V & Co posted THIS today…that's simply seren.dip.it.ous.

  • I don't know if Derek and I have EVER actually paid for the Internet.  When Derek started working with Cisco Systems we were in an apartment (i.e. dial-up) and as soon as we moved to a house (in 2000) the company picked up the bill for the Internet.

I don't even know how much this expensive habit costs me!  I've always taken for granted that this is not a monthly expense that we have to worry about…until Derek sent me this notice today:

Effective April 6, 2009, in the United States and Canada, most employees will no longer be allowed to submit a request for reimbursement of their home broadband.

Now – don't get me wrong.  I'm happy to pay for broadband if it insures us keeping our job…VERY happy to pay.  But how much is this going to put me out?  I have NO EARTHLY IDEA. 🙂

Oh and btw, I do not believe that the Internet is a disposable part of our lives.  It is a NECESSITY.  I will start making my own clothes, baking my own bread, and concocting my own soap before I EVER get rid of the Internet.
