Jacob participated in his first Pinewood Derby on Saturday…and it was so fun!  An aluminum track that was wired to a computer for instant results, hot dogs, popcorn and root beer, and LOTS of excited young boys.  Jacob worked hard on his car.  Derek took direction from Jacob mostly…Big J came up with his own design, cut it under D’s supervision, painted it himself, decided where to put the weights (he wanted to make them mufflers and "spikes" on top), and named it "FLASH".  And despite not being in the top 3 of his "division" (his Wolf Den, of which there are 12 or more boys), he did quite well…winning one heat and coming in a consistent 2nd or 3rd.  But if you know Jacob you know that 2nd or 3rd is kind of tough for him (I think he gets that from his dad!).  So we had prepped him all week on what he would do if he wasn’t winning.  There was only one moment of contained sadness, but overall he was such a champ and we were so proud of him.

I took this as they were announcing the cars that were moving on to the Finals.  "Oh please, oh please, oh please let it be me!" I imagine him thinking.

Bless his tender little heart!

Bless your tender little fingers because you get to start sewing all of those wonderful patches onto Jacob’s scout uniforms!
His car is super looking & the race seems very sophisticated since since Drew participated in Pinewood Derby – especially with scoreboard!

I’m still not sure what I think about the derby. It’s a lot of fun, but each boy wants so desperately to win. Think of the number of pre-derby conversations that take place as parents try to prepare their little cub scout that they might not win…
I’ve been noticing a nice open aperature in many of your recent pictures — looks great!
